Writer's picture: Jena BeckJena Beck

Alright, lovelies 🌿✨, let's talk about the jittery elephant in the room—Anxiety. We've all been down the rabbit hole of "What ifs" and "Oh noes," but for some, that tunnel is more like a never-ending maze. So, pour yourself some herbal tea (or wine, I won't judge), and let's get into it.

Now, you may remember our chinwag about comorbidities in mental health diagnoses. If you missed it, you're grounded—just kidding, catch up later! Today, we're diving into the twitchy world of anxiety disorders, where your brain turns every 'boo!' into 'DOOM!' Ah, the joys of overthinking.

Anxiety, What’s Your Deal?

Firstly, let's get the technical mumbo-jumbo out of the way. Anxiety disorders are our brain's melodramatic way of saying, "DANGER, Will Robinson!" sans the actual danger. If you have an anxiety disorder, your nervous system is basically on espresso shots 24/7. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), roughly 30% of U.S adults have tangoed with anxiety in the past year. That's a whopping 47.6 million adults constantly expecting the sky to fall.

The Many Faces of Anxiety

Wondering how many disguises anxiety wears? Let's dish!

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Think of GAD as your garden-variety worrier. Symptoms include being restless as a cat on a hot tin roof and having muscles tenser than an over-tuned violin. GAD currently hangs around 3.1% or 6.8 million adults in the U.S. Yikes!

Panic Disorder

Ever had your heart try to do a drum solo? Panic disorder affects around 6 million Americans. A panic attack is like a surprise party from Hell. Symptoms? Palpitations, sweating, and a VIP ticket to 'I-think-I'm-dying-ville.' We'll dive deeper into this disorder in a later post.

Social Anxiety Disorder

You're at a party and feel like you're auditioning for 'America's Most Awkward.' Say hello to Social Anxiety Disorder. About 15 million adults in the U.S get stage fright just thinking about small talk.

Specific Phobias:

From fear of clowns (Coulrophobia) to fear of heights (Acrophobia), phobias are as diverse as a hipster's vinyl collection. If you're interested, check out this extensive list. It’s a phobia feast!

Separation Anxiety Disorder

Ever feel like Velcro stuck to your loved ones? Separation Anxiety Disorder is more than just missing someone; it's an emotional anchor.

The Science Behind the Scare

Now, let's not forget the brainy bits:

  • Neurotransmitters: Your serotonin, norepinephrine, and GABA have gone rogue. These little guys are supposed to keep you calm but sometimes join Team Anxiety.

  • Amygdala: This is your brain's 'scare center.’ When it gets twitchy, you get twitchy.

  • Prefrontal Cortex: This smarty-pants region helps us adapt and make decisions. Anxiety essentially gives it a wedgie, making you less flexible in your thinking.

Parting Shots

Anxiety isn't all doom and gloom. A smidgen of it gears us for challenges by dousing our brain in dopamine. It's when that smidgen becomes a bucket-load that you need to seek help. Remember, when anxiety knocks, you don't have to answer. And if it breaks in, there are a ton of research-backed ways to kick its butt out.
